Visitors vs. Traffic

Published by grandy under Blogging Edit This

Dictionary.com defines visitor as:

vis⋅i⋅tor

/ˈvɪzɪtər/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [viz-i-ter] Show IPA

–noun

a person who visits, as for reasons of friendship, business, duty, travel, or the like.

While it defines traffic as:

traf⋅fic

/ˈtræfɪk/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [traf-ik] Show IPA
noun, verb, -ficked, -fick⋅ing.

–noun

1. the movement of vehicles, ships, persons, etc., in an area, along a street, through an air lane, over a water route, etc.: the heavy traffic on Main Street.

Somehow the blogging community seems split between what is more important to them, traffic or visitors. Both appear to be important to the success of a blog, and each play a very distinctive role.

I envision a visitor as someone who comes by and decides to stay a while, maybe chat a bit, have a drink. Bloggers who use their blog as a diary of sorts, I believe prefer “visitors” as it provides a sense of community. Whereas I envision traffic as those that zoom in and out, without much thought to where they are going or how long they will be there. Bloggers who use their blog to sell things, and want as many people there as possible, seem to want this. They want clicks no matter where they come from.

Through Entrecard, I have slowly been growing this blog (and my other blog) for both. I have a much larger sense of community over there, but it has also been around for about a year and a half. With this blog, I’m working on growing both numbers, but the traffic is definitely higher at this two month stage, more than my other site ever was.

Because both are uniquely important for different reasons, it’s only right that I show my appreciation to those droppers that help me in both arenas. I hope that, whether you stop here as a traffic stop on to your next destination, or you feel compelled to pull up a chair and stay a while, you enjoy your stay and know that I appreciate each and every one of you.

Here are my FEBRUARY TOP DROPPERS:

Change is a comin’

Published by grandy under Personal Edit This

It has now been about two months since I started this blog. When it began, I wanted to diary my daily struggles with all things technology related, while at the same time LEARN from all of you.

The other day, I found myself making the following comment in an email to my sister. No…not the twin sister who got the geek side of the brain…but another sister who wants me to show her how to use her cell phone for text messages. (I suppose I must be some sort of happy medium) Anyway, I sent her this email in response to an article written about her in a newsletter.

Interesting format. I wonder why it printed the html format.
When you put Trout and Bait it means that in the final draft it is supposed to be bold. But in your section, it wasn’t. Same goes with Speculator Review (or whatever the newsletter is) is supposed to be italicized.

Somewhere along the way I lost my concsiousness and started reading things in a different light. Funny how I might actually be “absorbing” some of this stuff. Maybe it’s osmosis…or maybe I’m actually making progress…but watch out fellow geeks, I’m catching UP!! Smile

BUT… I have SO MUCH GROUND TO GAIN!!!

All that effort

Published by grandy under Blogging, Challenges Edit This

Alright folks. If you have read even one post (or for that matter even the title of this blog) you know that Grandy struggles.

I feel bad when people request even the simplest of things, and I’m afraid to answer them in fear that they will not fully embrace my ignorance, and become rather annoyed with me. I think I’ve posted about this before, and I may seem like a broken record, but I truly think people FORGET that I DON’T GET IT!

When I started this blog, I was so very nervous about whether I was doing this right. Am I following the rules okay? Will “they” like this blog enough to think I’m complying with the rules of the posts? (Bet you didn’t know Grandy was a rule follower, huh?) I do try to be, and in this case I was really trying. In fact I even emailed “them” to see when they were going to review my posts to see if I was in compliance. (Good golly I’m a DORK!!)

Well it’s official folks…so far so good on the blog front. I’ve not been booted off the system…yet. It looks like so far my efforts might be paying off for good.

It’s all in what you learn from the process…right?

What about you reader? Are you a rule-follower? Do you follow directions?

And SPEAKING about following directions…Do you think the pilot followed his instructions here??

Monday Email Funnies - YouTube Sillies

Published by grandy under Funny Stuff Edit This

How did this commercial NOT make it into the mid-game viewing of the Superbowl, as it was intended? I would have remembered this for SURE!!

I don’t know folks, the talking frogs never really had much to do with the beer they were selling, and yet they were a hit. There are A LOT of commercials that air during the superbowl that require you to really pay attention to what is actually being SOLD.

This commercial, if it weren’t for the logo branding in the before and after, you would have NO IDEA it was for a beer.

The fact that people were paid to make this, and it wasn’t a home video (of sorts) makes it that much funnier.

Think the ad guy that wrote this spot still has a gig? I know it made me smile, but it didn’t so much make me thirsty.

Am I the only one???

A New Online Friend

Published by grandy under Reviews Edit This

I have made no secret of the fact that I’m not necessarily up to speed on everything there is on the web (I know this SHOCKS you ALL). I don’t know if you remember this post where I talk about my love for music, but have a lot to learn with respects to how it works.

One of the things I liked about Rhapsody at the time was the fact that I could listen to a Broadway station while doing my work online. Well, when I no longer wanted to pay for my subscription to that program…you know RENT the songs… I no longer had access to those radio stations that let me listen to a random selection of Broadway music. Did I mention I’m truly a geek about that stuff?

Well folks…let me introduce you to Accu Radio which has as many stations as you can think of. It’s a free online radio station. I’ve been working ALL DAY on my business plan that’s due tomorrow (which I need to rush back to) but I had to come online to share my new find with you all!!!! You can choose from any of these types of music:

AccuClassical Adult Alternative A Flock of ’80s Alternative Now! Bluegrass
Blues Brit Rock Broadway Cabaretdio Canadian
Celtic Chill Christian Contemporary Classic Rock Classic Soul
Comedy Country Decades Radio Electronic Folk
French Pop Future Perfect Radio Hip-Hop Classics Hiptronica HitKast
Jazz Listening Post Love Songs Radio Magic Sunny Lite Mix Melodies and Memories
Metal Asylum Modern Rock Classics Motel California My MVY Native American
Paste Radio Radio Preciso R&B Reggae Wonderland (beta) Sixties Oldies
Smooth Jazz Swingin’ Pop Standards Textures Twang World Music
Xmas

Grandy is having all sorts of fun with that Broadway channel…let me tell you.

Go off and get your music game on now!!

Grandy’s Head IS Exploding

Published by grandy under Challenges Edit This

Ok folks, it has taken me 30 minutes to get logged on to this desktop computer of mine, to get to the internet, get here, and do a post.

As you can tell, my laptop is still visiting the Geek Squad. Although, for the life of me I SWEAR I can’t figure out what is taking so long. I called today to find out the prognosis and was told…”They are still updating the anti-virus so call back Friday morning.”

Whohuhwhaaaa???

So what exactly does that entail? I’m desperate people. Tomorrow was supposed to be my “work remote” day from home but I can’t trust this dang desktop to get the job done since it keeps freezing up, I have to go in. (I know what you’re thinking…cry me a river Grandy.) But seriously folks, I am lost without my laptop and have documents saved on that thing that I need for a deadline on Monday.

I’m asking for all you beautiful technical minds in the blogosphere uniformly cross your fingers, toes, legs and eyes that I can get the laptop by FRIDAY!!!!

PUHLEEEEZZZZZZZ!!!!

Monday Email Pics - The Computer “Issue” Version

Published by grandy under Challenges Edit This

Hi folks! I’m afraid Grandy’s laptop is at the Doctor’s office. It went in for a “check-up” and is being kept for a few days for “observation”. The ironic thing is that since getting my laptop almost a year ago, I haven’t hardly used my desktop at all.

Apparently that is a big mistake because I have not been on here checking how this thing performs and what porn trouble my son is getting into. As such, this computer keeps freezing up, locking up, and everything BUT freeing me up to do what I need to do. Looks like I need to do some system check-ups (although who am I kidding I don’t even know where to start with that) and get this running too.

For today’s Monday Email focus, I’m going to post a picture that I actually do have posted at my desk. It is very appropriate for how I’m feeling about all things computerized at the moment. In fact, if I get this post up, it will be a miracle.

I will sneak my Tuesday focus in…and then by Wednesday night, hope to be able to report back on how Geek Squad did with my Laptop.

Dear Grandy ~ The Search Term Edition

Published by grandy under How-To Edit This

While I am still learning about search terms and how people are finding me, I really do like to giggle about the search terms used. Smile

In today’s Dear Grandy episode we talk about making that initial contact…

http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=text+a+guy+you+really+like+without+sounding+like+a+geek&form… = Start the text with “HI”. It’s all about the opening folks. If you like him, and want to text him (because with an almost 13 year old boy at home I know that is what you do) then text him with “Hi”. If he responds then be prepared with a question to keep him engaged. You know…”Did you finish your math homework?”

Am I taking for granted that the lovely young lady that entered that search term might still be in school? Of course I am. How do I know this?

A grown mature woman would ask the following question:

How to get a guy to want to sleep with you without sounding too easy?

What? Men…you know you would WANT that question, and Ladies…You know you’ve THOUGHT about that question. Guess what? The Grandy answer is the same… It’s all about the opening folks!!

“HI!”

MyBlogLog Debacle

Published by grandy under Challenges Edit This

I started my other blog in October 2007. It was an instinctive thing that I gave no thought to. I had stumbled across a friend who had one, thought that was a cool idea, and boom…Bob’s your uncle…Functional Shmunctional was born. It was born that same day!

Grandy has come a long way in the blogging world, but if you have followed this blog AT ALL, you know that I definitely have a long way to go.

Sometime back (it looks like February 2008) I signed up for MyBlogLog. I had no idea what it was, but stumbled across it and created an account. I never go in there, because I never really understood what it was. I once got a contact request from someone…but again I didn’t understand what they were asking for, so I ignored it.

As I frequent blogs I like, I was noticing my picture showing up in their little “recent visitors” widget.

That’s right…if you’ve seen this pic…it’s me…
new-do.jpg

The sad thing is…and this is REALLY sad people…I had no idea how my pic was getting there. Really. I’m a DORK! I’d go to a site and think to myself, “how does this site know I’m here?”

Seriously people, I cannot be trusted with hardware (or software for that matter) sometimes.

So, tonight I stumbled across my bloglog again. I realize there was a couple handfuls of contact requests (I have no idea how long you’ve all been sitting there). What? These people wanted to contact me and I had NO IDEA? Was I supposed to respond? Really?

If you know one thing about Grandy (okay make that two because the one thing is that I’m a technical idiot) is that I can’t tolerate rudeness. If I feel like I’ve been rude at all I’m devastated.

I would like to publicly apologize to all these people, and promise I will come to check you out soon.

Now I must go off and see what else I have to learn about MyBlogLog. A LOT I can tell.
